Marriages in Delhi- A flashy event

Any of you, if have ever been to a marriage in Delhi, must be aware of the grandness and the scale on which it is celebrated. Marriages in Delhi are usually a flashy event, consisting of large ‘barats’ with great pop and gaiety. People spend huge amount of money in decorating the venue for marriage. The venue and the food for the marriage alone shed lacs of rupees from the parent’s pocket. Few people say of course, why not, its an occasion for a life time, but for few it’s a wastage of money.

With the advancements and the society getting modern, we say the number of people practicing the custom of taking dowry is decreasing, but isn’t the money spent for servicing the huge amount of gathering at the marriage much more than what people used to give their daughters as dowry. Earlier people used to give dowry as their blessings and most importantly to satisfy the demands in terms of money and household items for the happy married life of the of the newly wed couple. But if we see today same is happening, we spent bags full of money to satisfy the ego of both the sides of bride and groom, and just to keep one’s nose above the other, many people even has to give their property on lease.

Though, it’s not wrong to celebrate the wedding of your children in a flashy manner, but spending more than required sets a challenge for the other person, and everyone wants to win this so called race of spending higher in the marriage of their daughter. It must sounding stupid to the rich lads of the society, but think from the point of view of a middle class person, who is getting buried under these pressures from the increasing demand for a super class marriage. Is it right, are we not moving to a stage which is again making daughter, a burden for her family? Lets not do this and the ideal solution for this is an equal share of both the bride and groom’s family in the marriage expenditure. Also because girls are no more dependent on the boys for their living and in fact in many houses women are the only earning members of the family, with all the family responsibilities.

  1. I consider spending huge amount of money in weddings, a sheer waste. Whether its decoration, food items, or anything, a lot of money is expended in marriages. Conducting weddings in lavish manner is usual now-a-days.

As it has already been pointed out in the post, there must be a system demanding an equal contribution from both the sides.

  2. these days spending money on a lavish marriage has no end,, people these days call in celebreity just to have few mins dance performance, which goes up costing them lakhs.the venue, decor, food all have become pricey and at the end of the day its the bride family who bears the cost.

last heard in news that grooms these days want to be flown in helicoptr to their wedding venue which is just few kms away.

dont know the demands of celebrating one event (marriage)has gone up so much that bride family end up spending their lifes saving.
