Costumes in Bengali Wedding



Weddings in India represent a combination of linguistic diversity and rich ethnicity of our country. Indian marriages involve celebration, rituals, fun and lot more.In India, marriage is believed to be a sacred institution where a woman and a man enter into a life time relationship.

Bengali matrimony has usually warm and rich style of wedding. The unique feature of this style of marriage is blowing of conch shell. Another point of attraction is the Ooli sound made by women throughout the wedding ceremony. As per ritual, the pious sound is made to draw everyone’s attention to the wedding ceremony.

Costumes play a vital role in Indian marriages where different cultures have different style of dressing. The most exciting part of Indian marriage is shopping for bride and groom.

Bridal look: In Bengali matrimony, getting dressed up for the wedding is a ceremony in itself. On the wedding day, the bride decorates herself in bridal get up where a traditional red banarsi saree looks awesome. The hair is usually neatly tied in a bun and head covered with veil. The bridal attire is incomplete without a white mukuton head.Finally, the bridal look is finished by making a design of mukuton her forehead with chandan paste.This look makes Bengali bride ready for other ceremonies to be followed.

Groom’s Look: The bridegroom wears a silk dhoti and kurta in Bengali wedding ceremony. At the time of performing rituals, the bridegroom drapes a white silk cloth known as jor around his body. The cloth is used to tie one end with that of the bride’s sareeto perform some rituals. The groom also wears a mukut known as topor on his head. Topor is a shoal conical hat made of paper.
